What’s the definition of great?

Rocco injury - Carina's Blog

Good morning lovely people

On 13 March 1996, Britain’s deadliest gun massacre occurred at Dunblane Primary School. This tragedy eventually led to legislation in the UK banning the ownership of most handguns.

18 people, 16 who were children, lost their lives and many sustained injuries. Andy Murray (and his brother Jamie) were at that school on the day.  Did this tragedy help shape these boys’ destiny with Andy achieving greatness?

He and his family have been an inspiration to many including our family. We still talk of No 1 son, aged 5, getting an autograph from a young Jamie. I heard Judy speak of her strategy for the journey to success for her boys; something I’ve been very mindful of for our team and our own family athlete.  Watching Andy fight for every point, regardless of how many sets down, winning Wimbledon (twice), Davis Cup and the Olympics to name a few will always be marvellous and make us proud of being Scottish.  He definitely made tennis great again in Britain.

Neither brother rarely, if ever, speaks in public about that horrific day. That moment of fate could have shaped a life of fear but thankfully for them and all of us, shaped a life of fight. Andy’s achievements are particularly significant. Not only a world ranking champion he is highly respected and loved by his contemporaries, especially the female tennis fraternity for fighting for equal rights for women players. You don’t need to like tennis to be a fan.

We all have tiny moments in time that shape our history.

Mr Trump on the other hand at 78, who seems to be inspiring millions, was also exposed to a possible change in his fate due to a bullet. This man champions gun ownership despite America having more civilian mass shootings than any other developed country in the world.  Fight is also his modus operandi but with a very different agenda. His missed bullet will, it is now predicted, seal his fate in the White House for a second term. Despite his court convictions there seems to be no conviction to ban guns. Even with such a near-death personal experience any change seems unlikely. What a missed opportunity.

We all have tiny moments in time that shape our history. Murray and Trump have both witnessed huge moments in their real-time lives.

Trump has taken his moment and is wearing his wound as a badge of honour running for President. Poor Mr Rocco was running in tall grass and got a bandage too. He was at the vet hospital to get a grass seed removed from his paw. Injury is sometimes the price some pay for what they love. Rocco with his sock on is paying the price. We wish Andy all the very best for the next stage of his journey. We will miss his fight on court. America looks like it’s heading for a different fight especially if Biden resigns. If only there was a silver bullet to fix that one. Politics is exciting. It probably needs to be boring to get the good jobs done.

We’re looking forward to Edinburgh getting very exciting over the next few weeks with the start of the festivals. Nothing boring about our beautiful great city in August.

Keep well and hope you get to join us.
