Both my husband and I love to travel and we get so much inspiration from our trips to anywhere we can manage to escape to even if just for a few days. What we’ve learned as the best experiences in other cities are those recommended by the locals. So here is my list of little gems that I feel make

Fashion: Has to be Thistle Street from top end to accessible treats all the way. Jane Davidson, ALC, Pam Jenkins Shoes and much more.
Unusal Places: Dean Graveyard – William Playfair’s tombstone the man we owe our skyline to.

Oxford Bar on Young Street, our infamous author Ian Rankin’s favourite bar.
Shops and Artisan Craftsman: Anta, George Street – Classic pottery, bags and homeware. Hamilton & Inches – Jewellery and Silversmiths. Mr Wood’s Fossils – Children will love this shop in the Cowgatehead. Unicorn Antiques on Dundas Street – if you love a rummage. Armstrongs – in Grassmarket for vintage clothing if you’re in search of a piece of vintage Harris Tweed. Arthur at Royal Mile Whiskies is a darling for retail advice and shipping tips for your favourite malts. The Cigar Box on the Royal Mile is also a highlight. Armchair Books on West Port – a wee gem of a second hand book shop.
Walks and Tours: The Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood. George Street to Stockbridge via Dundas Street. Cramond Beach

Views: South Queensferry – to take in the panorama of our three bridges spanning The Firth of Forth. Arthur’s Seat – Edinburgh grace (no disgrace to me). Carlton Hill – the replica facade of the Parthenon. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade – View from New Town of Edinburgh all the way over to Fife.
